Why Sheeba Started Solace ?

Sheeba Ameer, a dedicated social activist with over 20 years of experience in pediatric palliative care, began a life-changing journey when she founded Solace in 2007. Her inspiration came from the challenging three-year battle for her daughter’s health, including time spent at Tata Hospital in Mumbai, Asia’s largest cancer treatment center. This experience deeply moved her to address the struggles faced by children with long-term illnesses.

During her time at Tata Hospital, Sheeba Ameer saw the harsh realities confronting families, many of whom were struggling financially. Parents, uncertain about their child’s future, were often caught between the need to earn a living and the desire to stay by their sick child’s side. This heartbreaking reality fueled Sheeba Ameer’s resolve to provide practical support to such families.

While caring for her daughter, Sheeba Ameer also volunteered with the Pain and Palliative Care Society in Thrissur, Kerala. For seven years, she spent nearly every day immersing herself in the complex challenges of caring for people with terminal illnesses. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for her vision and gave her the strength to establish Solace 15 years ago, supported by a dedicated team of trustees and volunteers.

What started as a goal to support 15 children has grown into a remarkable initiative that now helps over 5,000 children facing conditions like cancer, thalassemia, cerebral palsy, nephrotic syndrome, hemophilia, heart diseases, epilepsy, juvenile arthritis, and more. Sheeba Ameer’s unwavering commitment to easing the suffering of these children and their families has made Solace a lasting symbol of compassion and care.

Sheeba Ameer believes that the greatest heartbreak is seeing children face the threat of death simply because their parents cannot afford vital medical treatment. To her, there is no pain deeper than witnessing such a devastating reality.

Sheeba holds the belief that the deepest heartbreak one can experience is witnessing children facing the looming specter of death, all because their parents lack the financial means for essential medical treatment. In her eyes, there is no pain more profound than being witness to such a devastating situation
